Modesto pet owners can get a low-cost spay or neuter for dogs and cats at The Pet Advocate in Tracy. From Modesto, the drive is about 35 to 45 minutes, longer at rush hour.
Most people come for a planned spay or neuter, a dental cleaning with full-mouth X-rays included, or walk-in vaccines with no office exam fee.

We're a spay and neuter clinic in north Tracy, about 30 miles from downtown Modesto. Modesto families come to us for planned work on a healthy dog or cat, from Salida, north Modesto, and anywhere else in Stanislaus County.
Dr. Michael Wesselink owns the clinic. He graduated from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 2015. Dr. Megan Conlin does the spay and neuter surgeries with him.

These are the current prices at The Pet Advocate. Pain medication and a recovery collar are recommended, not required.
Canine pain tablets are $21 and the E-collar is $18. We care for dogs up to 100 pounds.
The $700 includes bloodwork before anesthesia, anesthesia, a veterinarian exam, full-mouth digital X-rays, ultrasonic scaling, polishing, fluoride, and charting of each tooth. If the X-rays show a tooth that needs to come out, extractions are extra, and we'll call you first so you can decide.
Listed prices are the cash price, and credit cards add 3%. We accept cash and all major credit and debit cards.

Stanislaus County charges $12 a year to license a spayed or neutered dog and $150 a year for an unaltered dog, according to Stanislaus Animal Services. Owners 65 and older get 50% off.
Modesto residents license through Stanislaus Animal Services Agency, 3647 Cornucopia Way, by mail, in person, or online. Newman, Oakdale, Riverbank, and Turlock residents license with their own city.

Surgery and dental visits are by appointment, Monday through Friday. Fill out the consent form at home after it arrives by email, and withhold food and water from midnight the night before.

We call when your pet is in recovery and give you a pickup time, usually between 3:00 and 4:00. A late fee applies after 4:15, so it helps to plan the drive back to Modesto around that window.
More on drop-off and pickup is on our what to expect page, and recovery steps are in our discharge instructions.

For dental, send the online form with three tooth photos or a short video so we can tell a routine cleaning from a more involved case before you make the drive. Read more about low-cost spay and neuter, dog dental cleaning, cat dental cleaning, pet vaccinations, and pet wellness services.
Please look over these guidelines before you leave Modesto. If your pet falls outside them, a full-service hospital is the best place for that care.
The full lists are on our surgery requirements and dental requirements pages.
