WHy SPay & Neuter

There are medical and behavioral benefits of having your pet fixed. Having your pet spayed or neutered also helps prevent pet overpopulation and euthanasia of unwanted pets.

Medical Benefits:

  • Pets that are fixed have lower incidence/risk of certain diseases including several forms of cancer and uterine infections.

Behavioral Benefits

  • Female dogs that are fixed will not go into heat. This may also prevent unwanted visits from neighboring male dogs.

  • Male dogs that are fixed are less likely to roam and find female dogs when they come into heat. Neutered male cats and dogs are less likely to mark their territory with their urine.

  • Prevent pet overpopulation and euthanasia of unwanted pets.

When to Spay & Neuter

Female Dogs & Cats

  • Females should be spayed ideally before they have their first heat. We recommend spaying them between 4-6 months of age.

Male Dogs & Cats

  • Males should be fixed before they are sexually mature in order to reduce their marking behavior and prevent them from successfully mating with any females. We recommend 4-6 months of age.

If your Female Dog is in heat

  • It is not recommended to spay a female dog while they are in their heat cycle. There is a higher chance of postoperative complications when a female dog is spayed during her heat.  Females are generally in heat for 2-4 weeks. It is recommended to wait one month after her heat has passed. Please contact us with additional questions.
